How SRSA Keeps Our Team Safe and Cool All Summer Long

Summers in the Gulf South aren't just hot, they're intense. For our SRSA Property Management team, that means more than managing buildings. It means looking out for the people who keep those buildings running, especially the building engineers and property management staff who spend their days working outside in it.

Our Annual Heat Safety Meeting

Our Property Management team came together for our annual summer heat safety meeting, where we covered the essentials of recognizing and preventing heat-related illness. During the meeting, our Chief Engineer and our Manager of Property Operations & Compliance handed out cooling towels and additional hydration supplies to team members, reinforcing the training with tools they could put to use immediately.

Every year, we walk our team through the same core guidance, and we encourage our clients and tenants to follow it too.

1. Take Breaks and Cool Down

Outdoor tasks are often unavoidable, but pacing them is critical. We remind our crews to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas, especially during mid-day hours when heat is at its worst.

2. Hydration Comes First

Staying hydrated is one of the simplest and most effective ways to avoid heat exhaustion. Our Property Management team is encouraged to drink water and electrolytes regularly throughout the day, even before they feel thirsty. It's part of why we make sure hydration supplies are available and accessible on every job site.

3. Watch Out for Each Other

Heat-related illnesses can come on quickly. That's why we train our property management teams to look for signs of heat stress in themselves and their coworkers, such as dizziness, confusion, or heavy sweating.

4. Dress for the Weather

Light-colored, breathable clothing and protective gear like hats, sunglasses, and cooling towels go a long way. We make sure our team members are equipped to work smart in the sun.

5. Keep an Eye on Vulnerable Individuals

Children, elderly tenants, and pets are especially susceptible to high temperatures. We are trained to respond quickly if any tenant concerns arise and to report potential risks like malfunctioning HVAC units or locked-up vehicles.

6. Stay Vehicle Aware

Double-checking vehicles before locking up isn't just common sense, it can be lifesaving. We remind everyone to always look before they lock and never leave children, pets, or anyone unattended in a car.

Water Access at Our Office

Heat safety doesn't stop at the property line. Our main office keeps multiple water sources on hand at all times, whether it's having water for our team or a bottle to leave with a delivery driver or office visitor.

At SRSA, we believe property management isn't just about buildings, it's about people. By backing our training with real resources, we aim to make sure everyone stays safe, healthy, and cool all summer long.
